What it is:
Developmental editing looks at your story’s structure. To build a cohesive narrative, you first have to make sure that it’s standing on a solid foundation. During the developmental editing phase of your story, we’ll tackle “big picture” issues such as character development, plot holes, pacing, and narrative inconsistencies. We streamline your story so that it’s one fluid body, moving swiftly along, hitting the right beats and keeping your reader engaged.
What you get:
- Margin Comments – You will receive a copy of your manuscript with my comments and reactions using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes. My comments will point out places where the story drags, sections you might consider cutting, rewrite as narrative summary, or sections that may need further development. I will point out inconsistencies and discrepancies. I will also be sure to highlight areas that stand out.
- An Editorial Letter – A report where I go further into detail, analysing your story and discussing the issues present, as well as offering suggestions for improvement.
- Guided Support – Once you’ve received your manuscript and your editorial report, you’re welcome to discuss the suggestions provided with me. During your revision period, you can reach out to ask questions. After a previosly scheduled allotted amount of time in which you implement tour revisions, you can send the manuscript back to me with all the updated changes for one final pass through.
Who this is for:
For writers who’ve worked extensively on their novel and are preparing for publication.
For writers who’ve worked extensively on their novel, self-edited, and can no longer see the forest for the trees, who have hit a wall and sense they need a fresh pair of eyes to help them work out the issues of structure in their story.
What it costs:
A developmental edit costs USD $0.030 per word. This comes up to $2400 for a standard 80k-word manuscript. Payments can be made in three installments with a deposit paid upfront to hold your booking date, then a payment as we begin work, and a final payment upon delivery.
